Making a Fashion Designer Salary

Donna Karan, Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren – who knows how many millions these famous designers pocket yearly as a fashion designer salary? The average fashion designer, on the other hand, makes much less than this, more so for those in entry-level positions. But the good thing about the fashion industry is that it pays well, and there’s a lot of room for growth and a hefty pay raise for those who are really motivated.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the normal fashion designer salary range is very wide, with starting pay grades at around $32,500 per annum for the lowest ten percent and a whopping $130,890 annually for those in the highest ten percent. The median annual fashion designer salary is at $74,440 and the average annual salary is $64,530.

Factors Affecting Salaries

The fashion industry has a very broad scope, encompassing so many different fields globally. It even crosses boundaries to interact with other professions and industries. Because of this, there are quite a number of positions in the field, from seamstresses to fashion advertising executives. Position is of course the main factor affecting a fashion designer salary. The higher you rise, the more you get paid, and there are certain areas in fashion that pay more than others.

Educational background is another thing that employers consider when promoting people and wages. The more knowledge and skills you have, the more confident your employers will be in you and the more likely you are to rise in the ranks. Another thing to consider is the geographic location. There are more opportunities in the urban areas, especially in the known fashion capitals like New York, L.A., or Paris and you’ll have better chances of earning a higher fashion designer salary.

High-Paying Areas

According to research, the highest-paying areas in fashion are those that have to do with the film and television industries, wholesalers, footwear manufacturing, electronic market and durable goods. The highest employment levels were in piece goods, apparel merchant wholesalers, cut-and-sew apparel, notions, knitting mills and specialized design services.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has also forecast that between 2008 and 2018, there will be little change in the industry, as the high demand for fashion designers and other career opportunities continues to draw fierce competition. Clothing brands that mass-produce for the public are said to have the best chances for success. In the United States, the highest-paying states for fashion as of 2010 were New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Wisconsin and California. Meanwhile, New York, California, New Jersey, Ohio and Florida had the highest employment rates in the American fashion industry.

There are other related occupations that you might want to consider, such as interior design, jewelry, metal and precious stone workers, artists, photographers, writers and editors. Interior designers contribute by creating beautiful and safe office spaces and may even help during shows while those in the jewellery are in charge of producing accessories and other materials for clothing. If you really want a fashion designer salary, you’ll have to work your way up by using your skills and talents and find your niche in the industry.

The Cultures Behind Fashion Trends

From gladiator sandals to skinny jeans to animal prints – one has to wonder, what influences fashion trends? Where do all of these ideas, some of them great and some downright bizarre, come from and how do they gain so much popularity, spreading like wildfire until practically everyone on the planet who can afford it is wearing a particular item? Even if you’re not particularly fond of following fashion trends, you have to admit that there’s something to be said for a particular style of clothing that can move millions of people around the world to dress in it.

So what influences fashion trends? In a nutshell, fashion trends are made by people for people and are a reflection of human nature and human activities. You wear something as an expression of who you are, what you believe in and where you come from, meaning you are representing a certain kind of fashion culture that you are either a part of or that you want to be a part of.

High Culture

The idea of high culture is synonymous with luxury and a sense of exclusivity. These involve things like painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, literature and the like. What influences fashion trends can be seen in certain famous fashion houses, not only in their clothing lines but in their advertising campaigns too. For example, Gianni Versace’s logo is that of Medusa from Greek mythology, a stylized drawing on a golden, medallion-like background, which lends an air of bold artistry to his clothing line, along with a sense of high-end sophistication and glamorous seduction.

Pop Culture

Think the sixties and it’s tie-dye and peace medallions, while the seventies was all about the bell bottoms and platform shoes. This is one of the key answers to what influences fashion trends. Pop culture is basically what the media and the press hype up every day you turn on the TV or go online. This is the culture of celebrities and famous personalities whom everyone else wants to look like, and of clothing produced for the masses. For example, if a popular celebrity is photographed wearing a specific coat, sales on that coat are sure to skyrocket as certain popular celebrities are considered global fashion icons and role models. This is why many fashion labels turn to celebrities to endorse their clothing, accessories and footwear. Pop culture sells a certain lifestyle that people want to have and qualities that people want to possess.

Subculture

This is the culture of the “streets,” of those considered out of the mainstream, such as the hip-hop, graffiti, rock and punk scenes or the surf and skateboard cultures. If classified simply, this is the more bohemian aspect of fashion, of individualistic and unique styles, like the low-slung, baggy jeans that were primarily connected with the hip-hop scene or graffiti art on sneakers associated with skateboarding. The thing about subculture however is that it tends to turn into pop culture given enough time and attention. What influences fashion trends are the same things that keep these same trends constantly changing and that is something about fashion that will never go out of style.

Fashion Mirroring Social Patterns In European Society

What was first born in the mind of a designer is manifested in the materialistic world as fashion to dress women, men, teens and children. Ideas, visions and creativity transformed with fabric, thread and skill into garments that delight, seduce and trigger the feel of identification in buyers with the item. The psychology of fashion is complex and intriguing and to answer the question: “Why do we buy what we buy?” will take a full book to answer.

Garments are next to a protection of our bodies against cold and heat, extensions of our personalities. Each person is unique, has a different taste and also responses to clothing styles in a very personal and individual way. Cultural and moral influences that colored our personality are revealed in the clothes we choose to wear. The financial background is made visible by fashion. The clothing people wear in general enables us to sort them into groups and subgroups. Remarkable is that it is even possible to identify the attitude a person has towards the society as such by the fashion they choose to wear.

Examples: fashion unites and fashion divides

Fashion divided first the rich and wealthy from the common man. It was restricted to the royal courts and families that had their say in matters of the state, the region, the city or were connected to it in one way or the other.

In the beginning of the last century fashion celebrated its entrée to the middle class and a bit later to the masses. Industrialization of the apparel industry made it possible that women of all social backgrounds could dress up with their personal choice of clothing yet within the guidelines of what was accepted and what was rejected in society and the choices they could make depended, just as today, on their budget.

Evolving fast and mirroring the moral standards, circumstances and lifestyles of the society as a whole, fashion broke free and went wild after World War Two.

Teenage fashion in Europe was heavily influenced by trends coming from America, which got it’s foothold in the market. Young men started to dress up rebellious. Leather jackets and jeans created the “Marlon Brando Look”, accompanied by a girl in high heels and slim fit pants, or a body-hugging, narrow skirt combined with a top that revealed a seducing cleavage was the top. The so called “Elizabeth Taylor” style caused for many girls a lot of trouble at home. This group was opposed by traditional dressed young men in suits, white shirts and ties. Their girls were dressed in pretty dresses, blouses and petticoats under the circular cut, full skirts. The two groups could not find much of a common ground. For the first time, fashion made visible, who is conservative and traditional and who is exploring new terrain, equipped with a restless, adventurous spirit and the desire for change.

This trend proceeded into the sixties when next to the conservative young people two additional groups appeared in Europe that could be identified by the fashion they preferred. Well dressed “Mods” in flower printed cotton shirts and velvet pants met the “Beatniks”.

The Mods, interested in the arts, fashion and trends, cultivated the rules of society as a playground for their own needs and had no interest at all in politics. This group explored their limits within the accepted borders of the society and wanted to excel in originality. Organizing happy “Happenings” they were opposed by the anti-materialistic Beatniks that organized “Sit Ins” and demonstrations.

Stimulated by the music of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and The Rolling Stones the Beatniks were representatives of the anti war movement and fought against restricting laws and for human rights. Politically active they could be identified on hand of their clothes: jeans, t-shirts and/or jumper and parkas. These items were their common uniting clothing style and valid for the female as well as male gender. This fashion in its simplicity was very much worn as others wear a uniform. Olive green and knee long, the parka with hood, was like a flag, signaling the attitude these young people had towards the society and in specifically the Vietnam War. This fashion was present when the students fought in the streets of Paris and Berlin and had not much in common with the beatnik culture in America. Denied by this group as “fashion” because fashion meant “consuming” it was nevertheless served as such to the Beatniks with pleasure. Levis was “the jeans brand” and a must have for each Beatnik that walked the streets of Europe. Fact is that Levis jeans were everything else then inexpensive then and only available in special Jeans Stores in Europe.

Impact of past fashion up to today

Groups were even more divided in 1970. Accelerating in speed fashion moved on in the 70ies and had for all new developing groups something on offer. It rather seemed that fashion was uniting all these different streams, attitudes, ethics and moral values or maybe better said: it took the edge off. The love and peace generation brought the Indian clothing style to Europe and America which turned out to be a huge resource for fashion designers, inspiring and boosting their creativity. Long skirts and dresses next to cute suede and jeans mini-skirts, floppy hats, the tunica for men and women. Bell-bottom jeans and worn out jeans enhanced with embroideries and colorful patches, this free-spirited trend left its footprints in fashion and comes back in many forms and shapes up to today.

Suede jackets in the style of American Indians with beaded décor and fringed sleeves, or embroidered blouses picked from various cultures, such as the Spanish Carmen Look, Torero pants for women and Boleros created the so called “Folklore Look” which was extremely popular in Europe. By opening up the treasure box of fashion of the world to young consumers, interest in other nations was stimulated and tolerance nourished – raising the awareness that everybody on this planet has something worthwhile to contribute and to offer and that we can share all the beauty of fashion. The Folklore Look is still coming back in cycles in a tuned down style and dresses nowadays women of all ages.

The Disco glitter style, inspired by celebrities such as the music group “Abba” and the film “Grease” released in 1978 only confirmed that movies and music were actually able to set trends, and history repeated itself just like in the 50ies. The disco style was reserved to weekend wear when young people went out dancing and many boutiques offer this style up to today as popular evening wear.

Finding Personality in Ladies Fashion

Fashion is everywhere, and whether individuals are window shopping on the high street or relaxing at home, images of sleek and beautiful women wearing the latest garments cannot help but penetrate into everyday life. For many, modern day ladies fashion has become conformist and generic, as women’s clothing is sold cheaply, both online and on the high street. For those wanting to add some personality to their style, it’s important to think outside the box and not always follow the fashion trends, instead making an effort to create some unique looks.

Vivienne Westwood, herself, has expressed that cheap clothing has done nothing for fashion, with high street stores pumping out low cost garments, and flooding the market with thousands of similar pieces. This means that it’s all too easy for individuals to buy clothes that have no real personality, and offer nothing fresh or new to any look. Whilst dresses, tank tops and trousers may all have been cheap to buy and are comfortable to wear, for those trying to make a statement, fashion is often lost in translation.

To give high street fashion some real personality, women need to look at their style in a new way. Rather than simply buying a number of pieces from a high street retailer or online clothing store and pairing them together, accessories, customisations and one-off pieces can be added to bring some vital life to an ensemble. By combining clothing bought at high street stores and small, independent outlets, women can create a look which no-one else has. In addition, by using a mix of garments, unique looks can be brought together without huge expense.

With modern manufacturing meaning that ladies fashion can flow off the catwalks and into stores within mere months, it’s important that individuals wanting to look a little different from their counterparts, take steps to make changes that are unique. It’s no good simply mismatching clothing items from different stores, as whilst fashion may vary in branding, it is often very similar in colour, style or cut. This means that people wanting women’s clothing with a little something extra, should look to independent fashion boutiques, vintage stores and even charity shops, to help.

Independent fashion boutiques are not always as expensive as they sound, and women can often find small, start-up companies who have unique products for sale which don’t break the bank. An online clothing store which isn’t well known is the perfect place to start, and with lower overheads, companies can often pass lower prices onto their customers. Meanwhile, there are many vintage stores which sell dresses, tops and a huge range of accessories. Each piece has its own history, and will instantly bring a personality to any ensemble when it’s paired with high street fashion. Vintage shops also tend to provide good quality pieces which are well priced and offer something unique to any wardrobe. Dresses, gowns, shoes and jackets can all be found at vintage stores, making stores extremely rewarding for those wanting to customise their look. Lastly, charity shops can be a great place to look for fashion, as long as individuals are happy to rummage. Here, the quality of goods can be low, and whilst many items are well priced, it can take a certain amount of time and effort to find a hidden gem. However, charity outlets are ideal for finding accessories such as costume jewellery or scarves, and as women get to know the stores in their local area, the process of glancing through the racks will become far quicker.

Ladies fashion doesn’t have to be dull, and women wanting to create their own style and allow their personalities to shine through their clothes, can do a lot to make an ensemble unique. High street fashion should not be shunned in favour of other sources, as retailers are a great place to find cheap and in-vogue items to form the basis of any outfit. Meanwhile, they also allow women to buy many pieces of similar styles or colours, so that outfits can be created and interchanged easily. However, care should be taken to avoid creating ensembles entirely made from high street clothes if women truly want to develop their own look. By utilising a range of fashion sources, old and new can be brought together in a beautiful way, allowing historical items to compliment modern garments. And, by keeping in style with current trends whilst adding a little twist, women will fit seamlessly into contemporary fashion whilst radiating their own sense of style, beauty and personality.
